The roof was shot because the old guy that was caretaker here, he used to walk around on the roof and watch all the boats in the harbor. It was a mess. And also about the history of Staten Island, or the style that the house is decorated in, the Victorian style, your collection. The columns werent square wooden ones, like these, they were beautiful fluted ones with all the Corinthian leaves on the tops of them and all that stuff. So finally, I think, the old lady died, didnt she? But because I was military, the military shippedwhen they moved me, they moved all my stuff. I bought those buildings. And I went from room to room and it took me a couple of years, didnt it? [laughs] And I lived there for a long time. Daller: And when he wasnt doing that, he was horseback riding because he loved to ride and thats kind of segued himself to the Seguine House and to Bess. I fixed it up. You know, everybody knew him, and everybody, wow. And a couple of my friends came as bartenders for me. And I studied architecture and the history of design and everything, I know all that. Burke: But I forgot what the other two things where. Because we went to about every Air Force base in Europe there was, and I got around to see everything. Burke: Well, I was always an antique collector. Daller: We really cant give you any details on that. And that was a kitchen, and that was bedrooms and a little living room, all up there. I found him through somebody. All that gorgeous porcelain, like the Flower Sellers Childrenits a big piece like that. Then I got shipped to Europe. Because the other way, my uncle was digging into whatever a little bit of savings he had, in order to pay. I said to him, Are you kidding? And my neighbor across the street, who had lived there forever, she comes over again with a couple of little plants for me. Burke: Oh, God, I stood on the edge here and I watched what was going on over there. But she used to wear three, four dresses and she smelled like an old goat! And then I was able to get all my stuff out of storage and out of peoples homes where I stored them, and furnished the house and moved and lived in the whole house, took care of it. Because she begged me. And youd walk out, and the porch was all brick, and at the end of the porch was a big arch that had little windows in it and a French door where you could walk out to the garden. So I bought it. And you can put it together and fix it. So my sister Bess said, Well, come on, lets go to Florida. And I invested in a couple of things. And the house across the street from it, the Old [Sir Walter] Tyrrell House. And she couldntthey couldnt keep up with it anymore. And it never had a kitchen. Mom, you own the house, you own at least part of it, or half of it. He enjoyed hockey, football, and the beach, but most important to him was family and friends. Burke: It was. Yes. And while I was up there, I was sent up to work with Father Tom. And this is Sarah Dziedzic. Im going to retire, Im going to go down to that big old house, restore it, fix it all up, move in it, and enjoy it. And she was living here all by herself. George J. They talk about Tottenville, its all McMansions. Everything has changed, all the old houses are torn down. So this house tells a particular story, a long history, but it cant tell the history of the other houses because they were so different. Burke: Oh, God, Mario come out here all the time. Burke: Yes.
